It seems like there’s a cleaning product for everything, but who has space for all of those spray bottles and boxes of powder? And let's not even mention the toll bleaches and chemicals can take on the environment. The next time you’re at the supermarket, skip the cleaning aisle and head straight to your own kitchen, where you’ll find almost everything you’ll need for a stain-free home.

Baking Soda An all-purpose cleaner, baking soda is useful for a variety of cleaning conundrums. To lift odors, sprinkle baking soda on the bottom of your garbage bin, or place a jar in your fridge to keep unwanted smells away. You can also polish silver with a mixture of one part baking soda and three parts water. Got a stubborn surface stain? Simply scrub it away with a rag and a solution of baking soda and warm water. Also, try pre-treating grease stains by applying baking soda directly after the stain occurs. Then, sprinkle some in the washing machine before you do a load to increase the chance of removing the stain.

White Vinegar Its acidity makes it great for removing stains and adding some shine to your windows or glassware. In the bathroom, vinegar will remove grime around your faucets and tiles. It also keeps ants away when sprayed along windowsills and doorways. Furthermore, soaking clothes that smell of smoke in a tub of hot water mixed with a cup of vinegar will take the smell right out. White vinegar can even be useful as an alternative to bleach!

Lemon Juice Acidic and fragrant, lemon juice can be used all around the house. Cut up a lemon and rub it along your faucets and hardware to clean away grime, soap scum and hard water deposits. Or, mix lemon juice with olive oil to create a wood-polishing solution. At the end of the day, throw your lemon rinds in the disposal to clean it out.

Olive Oil Olive oil is great for polishing all kinds of surfaces, including wood, lacquer, stainless steel and brass.

Worcestershire Sauce Do you have any scratches in your wood furniture? Try wiping it down with some good ole' Worcestershire sauce before you bring it in for an expensive repair. It might just do the trick!

White Bread Bread can absorb oil and stains, so use it to rub out marks on walls, wallpaper, carpets and artwork.

Club Soda Another all-purpose cleaner, club soda can lift stains and clean counter tops. It also works to remove rust stains!

Ketchup Squirt some on a rag and polish copper or brass. Let it sit for a minute and then remove.

Salt Spill something on your counter or stove top? Pour some salt on the spill immediately; it will absorb the liquid and prevent it from sticking to the surface. The same applies for red wine stains on clothing, tablecloths or napkins.

Corn Starch Sprinkle corn starch onto stove top or microwave grease stains and let it sit for a few minutes to absorb the grease. Then simply wipe the stain away! To clean your carpets with corn starch, mix one part baking soda with two parts corn starch and sprinkle on the carpet before vacuuming.
