A friend of mine recently was raving online about liquid castile soap. The next time I was at our local store I saw a display on sale and decided it was time for a review. I decided to buy the baby mild unscented liquid soap so that I could try it and/or add my own essential oils to scent it to my preference. I was surprised that the store had so many scents available, though. I bought a 32 oz size. My particular store had only the 32 oz and 16 oz sizes for sale, but online a large variety of sizes are available.
Sizes, Scents, and Availability
Dr. Bronner comes in a few different scents. I tried unscented Baby Mild, but also available are Lavender, Almond, Citrus, Eucalyptus, Rose, and Tea Tree.
The bottles come in 2 oz, 4 oz, 8 oz, 16 oz, 32 oz, or 1 gallon sizes. They also come in a bar soap form.
Dr. Bronner's products can be purchased online, or local in many health food stores or green cleaning product sections at local grocery stores. Some local grocery stores may stock limited items in their regular cleaning supply sections. If your local store does not carry this product you may have success talking to a manager about ordering the products for you or for the store to carry.
Dr. Bronner's Labels and Uses
So I have to admit. I didn't pay much attention to the labels. But the bottle was sitting up on our bar after dinner one night while my husband washed dishes. After a few minutes he said, "What is this bottle of stuff you bought, and why is the label full of religious stuff?" I hadn't paid any attention to it, but laughed as we read a little together. The labels are a little weird to me, full of religious advice and lots of other stuff as well. But this has nothing to do with the quality of the soap.
Dr. Bronner himself came up with 18 uses for his product, but inventive people have been discovering new uses ever since. Many people use the soap for body and hair care, cleaning surfaces in the home, and a myriad of other uses. For my purposes, I primarily tested the soap as a diluted all purpose cleaner, strait out of the bottle as a degreaser and cleaner, and mixed with other common homemade cleaner ingredients to make my own cleaning supplies.
Dr. Bronner's Liquid Castile Soap Benefits and Cost
Dr. Bronner's Liquid Castile soap is organic and environmentally friendly. The company adheres to fair trade practices and makes a great quality product. I love that there are so many uses for the product. It works well on intensely greasy messy, washes away completely, doesn't over suds, and is great for mixing with other homemade cleaning ingredients. A 16 oz bottle will cost around 8.99 and 32 oz bottles will cost around 12.99 a bottle depending on your local prices.
Dr. Bronner's Liquid Castile Soap: Overall
I used the product to wash some super greasy pans and was pleased with how well it cut through even the toughest grease. It rinsed away cleanly. There is a feel to your skin after using the product. Rubbing my hands together after it was all rinsed away caused a lot of friction between my skin, and yet, there was no irritation to my skin that sometimes happens with other cleaners. I also mixed baking soda, castile soap, and lemon essential oil to make a nonabrasive cleaner. I loved the way my stainless steel shone when I was finished scrubbing and rinsing the sink. I think I've only begun to scratch the surface of the uses of this product. I love that there are such a variety of different scents to work with, including the unscented formula. It was nice to add my own essential oils and get the exact scent I wanted. Overall I was please with the versatility, effectiveness, and ability to customize the cleaning experience.
